Surgery Follow Up

Sofie had her scheduled chest xray and surgery follow up with Dr. S.P on Tuesday morning. Everything went well. He said her xray is unchanged from June with the exception of her left lung being better inflated with less atelectasis (small tissue collapse) now - great!

Normally she could go to yearly follow ups now, but since she has reherniated so many times he said we could still do a semiannual check up for one more year and then go year to year and left it up to me. I decided to do semiannuals one more year, so she'll be seen again in June and then again this time next year. If those go well, she'll only be seen yearly after that until she's 5 and then no more CDH follow ups!

Her pectus will keep getting worse, we already knew that. Her ribs are flaired out quite a bit from it as well. We will just watch her carefully as she gets older. Once she's 7-10 years old or so, and she's starting to be more physically competitive with her peers with sports and things we may see that she isn't able to keep up. Her pectus can cause her sternum to press in on her heart and may cause decreased cardiac output during strenuous activity. That is probably how we will eventually get insurance to pay for her pectus repair. This repair would be done somewhere between age 11-15. It's relatively minor compared to what she's already been through.

Working on a long overdue picture post during naptime!!

great news! I have to look up the pectus surgery. I thought it was a pretty big deal, especially for CDH kids who already have lots of scar tissue. Jack's is pretty bad too and I put it out of my mind to get it fixed but maybe it's not as bad as I thought.

We are concerned about Nayeli's pectus too. It seems like it has gotten better but sometimes it looks pretty bad.
Glad to hear Sofie is doing well. Look forward to seeing pics of her.

I've heard the surgery is not as invasive as in the past - but that is not from personal experience. Wait and see is good.

Glad her xray looked good!

Sending thoughts and prayers to one busy family!

So glad to read that Sofie is doing better. We have also inquired about the pectus excavatum as Alina's is quite noticeable. Our consultant said that the surgery in itself is not difficult, just not very aesthetically pleasing. Glad to hear that the xray looked good. We are praying for you.
